2011
The 2011 season of rockhounding has started and our first field trip was to Jerri Hill’s personal museum. This collection was his own personal collection with which he had collected since he was a young kid. His collection consisted of various minerals from around the world and Indian artifacts from North Carolina. Members that attended include: Shaun, Amber, Kathy, Russ, Mike, and Sandy. We had a great time looking at his collection and hearing his stories.
2010
The Greensboro Club takes at least 1 club trip per month to various mines and prospects across North and South Carolina. Field trip leader is Shaun Shelton accompanied by Laurie Adams. To obtain permission to attend these field trips membership is required due to SFMS policies. See the membership tab for more information on how to obtain membership to the club.
The second trip was to the Silver Hill Mine, located near Denton, NC. Silver Hill Mine was opened in the 1859-1862 and was mined for silver. Associated minerals were; Galena, Sphalerite, Pyromorphite, Calcite, Hydrozincite, and others. Below are a few pictures of a few specimens collected.
Our fourth and final trip for 2010 was to the Blue Wing Copper Mine near Roxboro, NC. Here members collected malachite and bornite. These were the most abundant of copper minerals present. Below are pics of the members collecting at the mine and specimens obtained.
